Morning cleared the rain from the pond bank. Milo the cat spotted a broad fallen leaf and imagined it bobbing like a tiny boat, while Poppy the puppy leaned closer, eager to see it float.

Poppy nudged the leaf into the shallows. It tipped at once, gulped water, and splashed Poppy’s paw.

Milo lifted the soggy leaf and studied its narrow sides. “It needs more room,” Milo decided, while Poppy watched hopefully.

On a smooth stone, Milo pressed the leaf’s sides outward with careful paws. Soon, it had become a broad, shallow hull.

The wider boat floated level, but it drifted in slow circles. Poppy tilted her head as Milo watched the wandering little craft.

Poppy trotted back with a slim fallen twig. Milo welcomed it beside the circling boat, ready to try something new.

Milo tucked the twig upright into the hull’s center. “A mast!” Poppy barked proudly as the boat steadied on the stone.

Milo set the mast-topped boat on the calm water. A gentle breeze carried it smoothly along the bank, and both friends followed.

Milo and Poppy walked beside their little boat as it glided past stones and ferns, keeping pace with its cheerful voyage.

A stronger puff sent the boat toward open water. Milo leaned forward, worried, while Poppy planted steady paws and hurried after it.

Milo guided the boat close to a flat stone. Poppy stretched low and gently scooped it from the water with one paw.

Inside the dry shelter, Milo set the rescued boat on the mossy floor. Poppy tucked her paws close, and they admired their tiny voyage together.
