Pip found one tiny seed in the dry meadow. Pip scooped a little hole at the edge and held the seed above it. “You can grow here,” Pip whispered.

Pip covered the tiny seed with soil. Then Pip tipped the sky-blue watering can over the patch. “Please, God, help my seed grow,” Pip prayed as the water sank into the earth.

The next morning, Pip came back with the watering can. Pip poured water over the patch and waited. But the soil was still plain and brown. Pip stayed beside it a little longer.

After more days of watering, Hazel came to see why Pip was so quiet. The can rested by Pip’s feet. Hazel peered at the bare soil. “Is anything happening?” Hazel asked. Pip wasn’t sure.

Clover came to look, too. Clover bent close and tilted their head toward the brown patch. Hazel leaned in beside Pip. They searched the soil together, but there was still no sprout.

“Maybe it will never grow,” Pip said. Pip curled beside the bare soil and looked down. Hazel sat close. Clover stayed near, listening.

The friends went to Elder Owl. Pip looked up and asked, “What should we do when we can’t see the answer yet?” Hazel and Clover listened.

Elder Owl traced a line in the dust. “Here is the soil,” Owl said. “A seed can grow roots underneath before a sprout appears above. We may not see the growing, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening.”

Pip returned to the patch and carefully tipped the sky-blue watering can over the soil. “Please, God, help my seed grow,” Pip prayed. “I can’t see what is happening, but I’ll keep caring for it.” Hazel and Clover stayed close, and Elder Owl watched from the fence.

The days passed, and the soil stayed bare. Hazel folded her paws. Clover brought their wings together, and Elder Owl bowed on the fence. Pip held the watering can and prayed. Soon, all four friends were waiting and praying together.

One morning, Pip leaned toward the patch. A tiny green sprout was pushing through the brown soil! “Look!” Pip cried. Hazel bent close. Clover opened their beak in delight, and Elder Owl smiled.

The four friends gathered around the little sprout. Pip clasped both paws together. Hazel and Clover brought their paws and wings together, and Elder Owl bowed his head. “Thank you, God,” they said together.
