Fern stopped beside the path. A lantern glowed warmly, caught tight in silver vines at the roots. She bent closer, careful not to tug. “How did you get here?” she wondered. Someone must be missing it.

Pip fluttered down to a low root. “Look,” he said, tilting his head toward a trail of tiny prints in the moss. Fern followed them with her eyes. They led away from the trapped lantern, deeper along the forest path. “Someone’s been this way,” Pip said. “I’ll see where they go.”

“I’ll free the lantern,” Fern said. She braced her paws against the roots and began easing the silver vines apart, one careful loop at a time. Pip lifted between the tree trunks and looked down, following the tiny footprints from above. The lantern still held fast, but Fern kept working while Pip traced the trail.

From a broad oak branch, Pip followed the footprints to a round clearing below. A red-and-cream cloth and a willow basket showed that someone had prepared a picnic there. Then he heard Nell calling from beneath the trees. “Has anyone seen our lantern?” Now Pip knew who was missing it. He turned back toward Fern.

Back on the path, Fern found the last vine loop and gently loosened it. It slipped free and fell in a curl beside the roots. At last, the lantern rested securely in both her front paws. Fern smiled with relief. Now she could carry it where it belonged.

Pip landed on a root beside Fern. “I followed the prints to a picnic clearing,” he said, pointing his wing down the path. “The lantern belongs to Nell’s family.” Fern held it close. “Then we’ll get it back to them before their picnic.”

Fern and Pip followed the tiny prints until they reached a sparkling stream. The trail continued on the far bank, but water ran between them and the clearing. Fern kept the lantern secure in her paws. “How do we get across?” she asked. Pip studied the stones in the stream.

Pip flew out over the water to get a better look. He hovered above the middle stones, then stretched one wing toward a line of fallen stones. “Those are close enough,” he called. Fern watched his route from the bank, holding the lantern ready. She could follow his directions, one careful step at a time.

Fern stepped onto the first stone, holding the lantern high in both front paws. Pip flew just ahead, glancing back to guide her. She moved to the next stone, then the next, keeping her balance as water glittered around them. “You’re doing it!” Pip called. Fern took one more careful step toward the far bank.

Fern stepped onto the far mossy bank, still carrying the lantern. Pip hovered ahead and turned toward the trees. “There!” he called. Beyond the bank, the picnic clearing waited. Moonlight silvered the treetops. “We’re almost there,” Fern said, and followed Pip.

Nell and her family were waiting by the picnic cloth. Fern held out the lantern, and Nell reached for it eagerly. “Our lantern!” Nell said, taking it from Fern. Her family gathered close as its glow returned to their clearing. Pip landed near the basket, watching Nell’s happy smile.

With the moon overhead, Nell set the lantern in the middle of the picnic cloth. “Stay and share our picnic,” she said. Fern settled beside the warm glow, and Pip perched near the treats. Nell smiled across at them as her family gathered close. The lantern shone over their happy little circle.
