Pip trotted down the winding path beneath the tall ancient trees. It disappeared into the mist. “Squirrel, Rabbit, Owl! Come march with me in a parade!” Pip called.

Squirrel leaned toward Pip from a tree root. “A parade? Yes! I’ll march!” Pip’s welcoming smile grew as Squirrel hurried to join the winding path.

“Hop along with us, Rabbit!” Pip called, stretching a paw toward the path. Rabbit landed beside the trail. “I’d love to!” Rabbit said, ready to join the parade.

A swoosh came from above. Owl swooped down from an ancient branch and perched nearby. Pip, Squirrel, and Rabbit looked up. “March with us?” Pip asked. Owl opened both wings in welcome.

Pip led Squirrel, Rabbit, and Owl to the glade. They gathered around the flat stone, ready to choose music. Pip looked from friend to friend. “What should our parade sound like?”

“A quick drumbeat!” said Squirrel. Thump-thump-thump! Squirrel’s tail bounced against the moss. Pip lifted a paw and listened. “That beat can make us march fast!”

“I like soft tapping,” said Rabbit. Rabbit touched one paw to the stone. Tap, tap, tap. Pip bent close to listen. “Your taps are gentle,” Pip said.

“My turn!” called Owl, spreading both wings. “A grand hoot!” HOOOT! Squirrel covered both ears. Rabbit leaned back. Pip looked from friend to friend. The parade still had not begun.

Pip sat quietly beside the stone. Tap, thump, rustle, hoot. Pip listened again. The sounds did not have to happen all at once. “They could go one after another, like footsteps on the path,” Pip said.

Pip tapped a paw on the stone. Rabbit tapped too: tap-tap! Squirrel’s tail thumped. Owl rustled both wings, then gave a grand hoot. “Tap-tap, thump, rustle, hoot!” called Pip. The friends tried the rhythm again.

“Let’s march!” said Pip. Along the glowing mushroom path they went: tap-tap, thump, rustle, hoot! Rabbit tapped, Squirrel’s tail thumped, and Owl glided above with a happy hoot. Their parade had begun.

Pip trotted on, looking back with a proud smile. Squirrel’s tail thumped, Rabbit hopped and tapped, and Owl flew above with wings spread wide. Their sounds rang along the glowing path as the parade curled into the mist.
